Praying For Rain

B is stuck at his once oasis, which is now quite parched. Will the rain he is praying for save him? [This is my first ever level. I know I've critiqued hundreds. Hopefully you'll be kind. Free camera not required but an exploit is. Please see the Caption tab for more details on hints, etc. Thanks.]

      @a220 - How are you making out?

      @meko - any thoughts on this level?

      @vince - I just finished your Square One II and I would have to agree with @meko that your version of a falling trick should be outright banned. I dislike it even more than the one used here.

      @TR O - Thanks for the rating and seeing the humour!

      @Gepeto - Thank you for the rating, explanations, and feedback! Yes, you did it in the intended fashion! But you probably already know that from checking all the fanfare around here. And yes, I sometimes have trouble with releasing the lift in the second version as well. The draggable is sticky for some reason and the only fix is to exit and re-try the level.

      @Block builder - Yeah, I hear you on the "going to page 1" nuisance. Interesting find you made about a hybrid bug/trick. Contrary to @Frenzies, I actually think yours is more similar to @vince's. As I've repeatedly stated, I'm not a fan of weird tapping expectations from players. @vince's is the least intuitive. Oh, and thanks for the feedback on the art. It was my main objective.

      @Frenzies - Thank you for giving the second version a shot, and although there is an improvement in one area, it doesn't look like I will post it given the sticky draggable problem.

      @richardfu_ - I've created a third version just for you:

      Everyone - The third version incorporates another falling trick that we haven't yet given a name to. I believe @meko showcased it first in Mini Pagoda. I'm loving the community, cheers!

      @nGord Love the 3rd version, although I can't seem to consistently fall (it takes me some tries) using it. But it's definitely the best of the 3 versions.

      @nGord I got some idea about the 3rd one too. May comment it too. I write them in the spoiler?

      @nGord If you hate it in Square one II, you will love it in Square one III :p

      @vince - I hope that's not sarcasm. :rolleyes:

      @nGord
      The 3rd version is more stable. B land safely on the tree unlike the 1st one due to the instability of B's body movement(rag-doll). However, in terms of art, I think it

      is not as good as the 1st. One of the reason is that the unevenness of the cloud created by the stairs and pillar makes it not quite visually pleasing. The simplicity of the 1st one gives a bit high

      class feeling and supremacy to it. And also seems impossible to complete, which match the title more, like miracle. But I guess the 3rd one is more friendly.
      Edit: I thought you know the falling trick at first...

      This level has the most comments in the forum! And to think it's your first level... lol

      @TR O - Wonderful feedback! Thank you so much! I agree with you completely and I'm glad that you saw the comparison of B's struggles to reach the win with his despair for rain.

      @Frenzies - Thanks for giving the third version a shot too. I'm glad you liked it and thus made my efforts worth it. Oh, and the reason that B has some trouble falling is due to the extra blocks around the stairs (as compared to meko's level), but I needed them to hide the metal blocks.

      I'm going to end it here then! Sure I'll take more feedback and would love to hear more or from more people, but I don't think I'm going to be convinced to re-issue this level in a different format. This was a fun exercise. Thanks for the encouragement! I learned a lot too.

      first time to see this "desert effect" thing. I wasnt really reading everything but did meko said he was somehow able to edit the qr code? :)
    • Frenzies
      @Propesyonal He said that, but he was just joking. Some people took him seriously, though :rolleyes:
    • Dulqosim
      Where the checked picture? It's possible?
    • Frenzies
      @Dulqosim Yes. @nGord shared the export image because it looks better, and is much more reliable to scan.

      @Dulqosim - My first comment (on page 1) admits that there is an exploit required. I've also placed three hints and explanations to the hints if you need/want. Admittedly I am not a fan of the exploit used in this version, but I created it so so as to be artistic and as a gift to @meko, who particularly likes compact levels. I've uploaded two more versions that have easier exploits involved. I hope you like one of them. Have fun!

  • The point of this level was more about the art and of course to show that the Desert Effect could be discovered by others. I tried to include as much gameplay as could fit, but in doing so I incorporated some design elements that I am not proud of. My apologies in advance.

    For those that don't like the exploit used in the original upload, here is an alternate version of the level with a simpler exploit (hint: stand B on the pillar and send him to the stair block):
    [IMG]

    Hints to the original version:
    What goes up, must come down.
    So we know that stone blocks can't move. You're getting warmer though...
    This level relies on an inertia-based exploit. As much as I personally detest inertia-based exploits, I had little other choice to make the level this compact. You may need to be gentle with its execution too - so as not to have B fall too far away.
    From upcoming documentation:

    DISCOURAGED BUGS OR EXPLOITS
    “Boogie Bot Bug”

    If you move B back and forth, especially around the corner of a hole or set of blocks, he will get dizzy. If you get him dizzy enough, his weight will be enough to make him fall (either up onto or down from a block).

    First demonstrated and implemented in a level by @Weders, 4 June 2016
    The Boogie Bot Bug is an inertia-based bug because it uses B's inertia to fall. If you move B back and forth around the inside corner of the cloud above the win block, you'll notice that he'll start leaning into the corner and eventually he'll fall into it.

    The Desert Effect:
    Credits:
    @meko - for spurring me on to figure out the Desert Effect on my own;
    @Weders (and others) - for the exploit used in the original version;
    @meko - for the exploit used in the above Alternate (Third) version.
