Praying For Rain

B is stuck at his once oasis, which is now quite parched. Will the rain he is praying for save him? [This is my first ever level. I know I've critiqued hundreds. Hopefully you'll be kind. Free camera not required but an exploit is. Please see the Caption tab for more details on hints, etc. Thanks.]

Considering that this is your first level you did a good job.
The minimalistic style is very effective, and the controversial trick in my opinion has added a bit more challenge.
Among other things, you have managed to discover the desert effect alone, which underlines how much you have committed yourself.
Actually I didn't find out, but as you well know, it was Caken in its "dat UFO" level. when I saw it for the first time I was at the same time astonished (because I had never seen such a thing and I was more attracted by the appearance of the blocks rather than their functions) and disappointed because Caken had not left any explanation about it. I really spent a lot of time trying to find out what was the part I missed, the secret to reveal. And in the end I did it.
It is not a revolutionary discovery, but it allows some levels to have a special and characteristic atmosphere (e.g. the Dalton series by Block Builder). Why didn't I share the method to get that effect? Maybe because I had become slightly jealous of that method since I had worked so hard to find it. Certainly what I did is a questionable choice, but in this forum there were intelligent and curious people who would have discovered it very soon...
And this is where you and your first level enter the scene.

After that necessary review, I made a sterile but slightly interesting discovery. If you have built a 16x16 level and put a lot of blocks: set the water at 1.5 height.
The grass blocks on the floor become deserted.

Wow @meko, thank you so very much!

That must be your longest review ever, and despite English not being your first language, the quality of your words was amazing. I feel so honoured.

Thank you as well for the kind words and for completing the story. And thank you for spurring me to try my hand at creating levels.

I will always be indebted to you for all the joy you gave me with your levels. Putting in the effort to try and make even one gave me such a better appreciation for the amount of time and dedication you put in.

You are gracious, noble, and talented. It is a veritable pleasure to be in your company.

      This level is so satisfying.

The boogie bot bug even worked well in this level.

Thank you @Ray Aznable, @aman rajput, @Anomynous, and @P_simorf for playing and taking the time to comment and rate this level. You're obviously all too generous, but I am glad that you found some enjoyment in it.

@Anomynous - those four stages were the plan. So glad that they worked! :D

@P_simorf - the BBB was the intended solution. Not a well liked trick, but I'm so happy to hear that it worked well for you.

@Ray Aznable - wow, you found the stuff in the Caption tab. Pillar Jump sounds appropriate. ;)

For me, B falls more immediately in BBB than in ToA.

      Great for your first level!
I agree and hate inertia-based tricks (they're so hard:mad:)but, as you said, there wasn't much space.
I couldn't do the boogie bot trick nor the alternate way to complete the level, but rated anyway.
As for the desert effect, my brother also discovered it all by himself (without knowing it existed). It's gone out of use after Martin Magni added the Dirt block.

  • The point of this level was more about the art and of course to show that the Desert Effect could be discovered by others. I tried to include as much gameplay as could fit, but in doing so I incorporated some design elements that I am not proud of. My apologies in advance.

For those that don't like the exploit used in the original upload, here is an alternate version of the level with a simpler exploit (hint: stand B on the pillar and send him to the stair block):

    Hints to the original version:
What goes up, must come down.
So we know that stone blocks can't move. You're getting warmer though...
This level relies on an inertia-based exploit. As much as I personally detest inertia-based exploits, I had little other choice to make the level this compact. You may need to be gentle with its execution too - so as not to have B fall too far away.
    From upcoming documentation:

    DISCOURAGED BUGS OR EXPLOITS
    “Boogie Bot Bug”

If you move B back and forth, especially around the corner of a hole or set of blocks, he will get dizzy. If you get him dizzy enough, his weight will be enough to make him fall (either up onto or down from a block).

First demonstrated and implemented in a level by @Weders, 4 June 2016
The Boogie Bot Bug is an inertia-based bug because it uses B's inertia to fall. If you move B back and forth around the inside corner of the cloud above the win block, you'll notice that he'll start leaning into the corner and eventually he'll fall into it.

    The Desert Effect:
    Credits:
    @meko - for spurring me on to figure out the Desert Effect on my own;
    @Weders (and others) - for the exploit used in the original version;
@meko - for the exploit used in the above Alternate (Third) version.
