It looks like the forum supports the ability to be notified about a selected user's activity, but it isn't working the way i expect... I'm not getting any notifications about the users whom I have flagged to follow.

Is there some setting that needs to be enabled, in order to receive notifications of activity by followed users? Or is the effect of following someone more subtle than what I'm expecting?

I don't know... I haven't received any alerts from the following feature, either. Maybe it's broken...?

Hmm, so I have had problems with the system's alert feature as well, but I don't see any setting to be alerted by activity of those that I follow so I suspect you're referencing some other setting.

First, we should clarify whether you're asking about "email notifications" or "alerts"?

What I do experience with the "follow" feature (can't find where it is written as "following") is that activity of those that I follow is listed in my "news feed."

    Does this help?

@nGord Of course - that must be it. I've never noticed the news feed before. But it certainly seems to keep track of those whom I've favourited. Thanks! Mystery solved.

Yes the news feed is to see activity of those you "follow".

There are also "Alerts" for things you "watch" which can be managed by the upside down raindrop icon next to your profile name at the top right of the page. Of course you need to be signed in to see this. You have the options to Show All alerts or change the preferences (basically what you watch automatically). Now unfortunately these automatically watched items only show up in your alerts on the website, not your email, as far as I have been able to tell.

You can however manually watch forums, threads, media, albums and categories, and clicking on the link to watch any of these will bring up an options panel to let you choose email as a notification method. So for example if you like one person's work you can "watch" their albums and specify an email notification, or just the regular alerts.

    Does this help?

@B Hill - Thanks. I'm pretty much ok with the alerts and emails, but there are bound to be folks who are new to forums (fora?:p) , and your explanation will help to straighten out a few question marks!

I seem to recall recently coming across the option to switch off email alerts per thread/level/conversation.
Am I looking in the wrong places?
Or is it just wishful thinking?

@trids, I'm not sure about conversations, but as far as levels and forum threads go, when I click on the "watch" in the top right of either I still get a pop-up that allows me to tailor whether emails will be sent or not. Does that help?

Edit: P.S. As I'm sure you're aware, under your profile preferences you can make broad settings as to what can be automatically set to "watch" and whether you want the email or not, but I understand that this does not answer your question. Though, in case you are automatically watching levels/threads that you later want to tailor, you can un-watch and then re-watch something in order to get that aforementioned pop-up. I'm adding this postscript more for the benefit of others.

There we go  .. that's exactly what i came across!
Thanks for restoring my sanity, although my problem now is that this feature is missing from conversations. And switching off emails in general is a step too far.
In this case, i think the solution is to explain to my conversation partners why the conversation would be better executed as a forum thread than a conversation.

So next question, how difficult would it be to move the conversation to a thread?
