While doing mechanism for Square one level, I found that a ball falling on a moving block can stuck it forever (see the test level attached).

The workaround is to leave as much space as possible around the slider.

That's interesting - thanks for sharing!

I explored this a little bit, and it looks like there's something else at play there. I don't know what it is though, cos i couldn't duplicate your results in this model below, where balls are both free flowing and restricted, and meeting the moving block from different angles ... [IMG]

    ... Mysterious!

It happens only when the ball is hitting the moving block when it is stopped and about to go to the other way.
This was driving me crazy until I solved it by deleting blocks around the slider. The ball is probably moving the slider a little, and it get stuck by other blocks.

I also noticed this while creating my Upside Down level. To me it looks like the ball's impact would displace the slider by a little (not noticeable by normal eyesight), and I tried to prevent its occurrence by using a bracketed metal block instead of a full cube. The curved endings seem to have reduced the chance that it might get stuck while sliding by a stone block.

Also the ball sometimes might get stuck while the slider is pushing it into place. I had to use multiple sliders (hidden under the roof) because of this, as they appear to add more strength to the slider and ensure the ball would always be pushed into the right spot o_O

Yes I just noticed that 2 slider are stronger than one. For example, 2 sliders can push another single slider. I think it can be used instead of a pushable object, wich can be stuck easily or go where it is not expected.

I also just noticed that not only multiple sliders, but also multiple motors (in the same direction and along the same axis) would generate a stronger force compared to a single motor. The rotation speed remains the same but it can rotate against a single motor obstacle. Not sure what we could build with this though :D

Have you noticed that after a few seconds the freeze seems to thaw, and life goes back to normal? The slider reverses and the ball falls free.

    From weird to weirder

Maybe not as a feature, but it may help when we're building something that needs a little more force to move

Yes I have noticed this behaviour sometimes, but it can also stay stuck forever, depending on the surrounding blocks. Seems random...

@vince - yes, and i would say that that randomness makes this a cautionary tale. Because it's more likely to spoil the functionality of a level than enhance it.

Maybe we should start a thread that lists (indexes) dangers that designers need to be aware of - and its first entry would be this very thread.
