R-bot Tricks Demo III
cpw, Dec 29, 2016
    • cpw
Here’s the third demo of recently discovered R-bot tricks :) Please note: Due to the increased trickiness, it is recommended that you should complete the 1st and 2nd demos before this.

In this demo you will learn about:
      • How to carry an object on R's head
      • 3 ways to Auto-climb
      • 2 new ways to manipulate R-stopper
      • How R is affected by blocks under an inset downward staircase
      • A one-way spiral staircase
      • Tiptoe pushing
      • How to walk in a "fifth" direction
      • 2 ways to Squeeze-push
      • How B can directly step onto R's eye

      In order of occurrence:

      1. Delivery Bots — Once the level has started, immediately hold the underground draggable (Refer to 2nd demo about the Teleportation Button). The two teleported bots would immediately lift and move the free block by their heads. Note that the bots would continue to move, but the leading bot would turn around once the hole in front is blocked by the stone pillar on the ground (due to the effect of R-Stopper).
A trick-free version was first used by @cpw in The Twins IV.

      2. Auto-climbing

      • Ball rolling — As the first ball unfreezes the shorter R bot, lift the nearby draggable to release the ball with the right timing. Note that you may need to retry this move to get the exact timing, as the ball has to roll by exactly when he is approaching the tip, such that he will continue walking, then fall onto the ground, and automatically climb back up to the grass block.
First used by @vince in Creep.
      • Ghost block — Similar to the last move, let R walk across the gap when the rotating pillar is about to reach its Up position. You will need to hold the draggable with R on it, and release it when the pillar is pointing inwards (90 degrees away from pointing upwards). R will then fall onto the metal platform and climb onto the stone block.
First used by @vince in Break Out.
        - Notice that R will continue to squeeze through the hole.
      • Floor dropping — Similar to the previous two, simply pull the motor down to cause a sudden drop. R will continue to climb and squeeze through the hole.
First used by @cpw in Double Down.
        - Notice that since there is no floor block in front of the hole this time, R will directly fall onto a lower level.

      3. R-stopper (underground switches)

      • Lurking Eye — Push the eye against the floor from beneath. The eye (which only occupies half the height of a grid) now “overlaps” with the floor partially. Since the eye is normally non-walkable, it spreads the effect onto the floor, causing R to realize it’s a dead end, and turn around.
The "Lurking Eye" effect was first discovered by @aliwardana in Forbidden Path.
      • Supercharge — Pull the zapper down using the draggable on the edge of the level. The walkable zapper (which overlapped with the fence above) has spread its effect onto the fence, causing the normally non-walkable fence to become walkable. R is then frozen as he tries to step onto the fence.
The “Supercharge” effect was first discovered by @cpw in Adrenaline Rush.
      4. Tunnel Walk — Release the slider underneath such that it moves one grid ahead of R. Note that you may need to retry this move to get the exact timing. The slider allows the bot to walk forward, and without it, R cannot walk through the inset downward staircases (since there are no supporting blocks underneath).
First discovered by @retrograde in Mayday Cay (a more automated version is used in this demo).

      5. One-way Spiral — R goes up by the counterclockwise spiral staircase. Notice that the spiral is one-way as R cannot go back down (despite he tries to turn right). The effect can be explained by the fact that R only steps onto a parallel staircase but not a perpendicular one (while B can do so under the same setup).
      * First seen in one of @Ricko 's levels but seems like I can no longer find it (also not sure if there is any earlier example).

      6. Tiptoe
      — R would try to move onto a blocked upward staircase despite the fact that it is a dead end. With a movable object above it, R is able to push the object (while B cannot).
First discovered by @richardfu in his legacy Mini Tower. The smaller version was created by @Frenzies in a Cool Kids' discussion and utilized by @richardfu_ in Sky Bridge.

      7. Fifth Direction — Turn the draggable bar towards the wedges. Similar to the Off-the-Grid trick by @vince (Refer to 1st demo), R now walks diagonally to the grass block.
First used in @meko ’s Five Directions.

      8. Squeeze-push
      • Teleportation button — Immediately hold the underground draggable as R approaches the upward (inset) staircase. The approaching R is teleported to collide with the frozen R. This pushes the frozen R onto a lower level.
First discovered by @cpw in Mini Push.
      • Floor dropping — Again, pull the motor down to cause a sudden drop. R then squeezes himself through the hole, and pushes B off the cliff.
        First shown in this demo.
      9. Carrier — Continue the separate paths of B and R on the lower level. With B waiting on the last grass block, let R step onto the rotating ball and bend his body. As he arrives in front of B while bending, move B onto his back immediately. This allows B to directly step onto R’s eye. R will then bring B to the Win.
First discovered by @richardfu_ in Carrier.

Do leave a comment if you have more tricks / earlier examples of the above tricks (especially #5). ;)

A nice demo which requires some skill to complete. It even shows some variations of the same trick.

Another awesome demo/level (lol @vince's lemo) that showcases a great variety of tricks. It's amazing how R went from "Robot Turns Right" to "Robot Pulls Oh So Many Tricks"! It just goes to show all the potential there is in making levels with R.
Your explanations are really clear and do help understand what's going on, although some tricks are intuitive enough to pull without the explanations I think for a demo a lot of users will appreciate the context it gives, so thank you for your time and dedication to the making and explaining of the demo.
Now I'll just patiently wait for a 4th demo...
Oh, don't know if this helps, but the 5th trick, One Way Spiral, is used in Can't Win by @Dust ChucKing (Cool of Duty), but I'm not sure about the timeframe...

@Chuckthulhu Thanks again :D Yep I also saw it in Can't Win, but if I remember correctly there was also a recent zapper level from @Ricko which also utilized it......in which @chemi found a shortcut so it was re-uploaded once.

@cpw Yes, I was away from the internet for some days. You noticed? That means I'm here too often :D.
